7-Day Spring Maintenance Challenge…Ready, Set, Go!

By: Highlands Residential Mortgage

Can you believe it? The Spring season is upon us and I am more than ready for some warmer temperatures. Home maintenance is the best thing you can do to preserve your property value and avoid surprises and spring is the perfect time of year to get your house in shape. This is the time to take on spring cleaning projects and be ready to enjoy the beautiful outdoor weather with family and friends.

Some people like to go all-out and take care of all the spring cleaning in a couple of days. If you don’t have the time or energy to devote to hours of intense cleaning, break it down into a more manageable 7-day schedule or spread it over a course of a month. Get the whole family involved to avoid being overwhelmed and you will have your house sparkling in no time!

Day 1 – Kitchen Round 1

  • Wipe down all counter surfaces
  • Wipe down all cabinets to remove greasy buildup
  • Clean stove top, oven, and microwave inside and out

Day 2 – Bedrooms

  • You can do all bedrooms in one day or have each family member responsible for their own room – do what works best for you
  • Change out your linens, wash pillows & comforter
  • Wipe down baseboards, windowsills, blinds, and ceiling fans
  • Wipe down mirrors
  • Dust furniture and vacuum your floors and your mattress (flip if necessary)

Day 3 – Kitchen Round 2

  • Tackle the pantry! Remove everything from the pantry and throw out expired food, donate any non-perishables that you are not going to use, and wipe down the interior/exterior of the pantry/cabinet
  • Organize the food as you return it to the pantry
  • Move on to the fridge: remove items and wipe down the interior/exterior
  • Clean the dishwasher, organize and clean the cabinet under the sink, and do the same for any other cabinets or drawers

Day 4 – Living Areas

  • Dust and clean all surfaces and electronics
  • Set out spring décor
  • Vacuum and spot clean upholstered furniture
  • Wash curtains and any throw blankets
  • Clean floors – vacuum carpet & clean hardwood floors

Day 5 – Bathrooms

  • Organize medicine cabinet and safely dispose of expired medicines
  • Wipe down interior of cabinets
  • Wipe all surfaces with antibacterial cleaner
  • Mop floors, clean mirrors, and dust light fixtures

Day 6 – Laundry Room

  • Clean washer and dryer
  • Inspect the washing machine water hoses for cracks and the dryer for lint buildup
  • Dust and declutter

Day 7 – Household Maintenance

  • Clean front door and add spring floral to make it more inviting
  • Pressure wash patios, decks, driveway/walkways, and outdoor furniture
  • Inspect outdoor sprinklers for any damage due to cold weather
  • Check HVAC air filters and inspect the air ducts for buildup of mold, allergens, or debris
  • Inspect the air-conditioning system before we hit hot summer temperatures to avoid unexpected costly repairs

That’s it folks!
Now you can sit back and relax, soak in the beautiful sunshine and the spring weather, and start planning for the summer cookouts, pool parties, and other outdoor shenanigans.
